Gabriele Hohne’s art honours the world beyond the human eye, the intersection of animism, mythology and divine forces.
She is based in London but also works in wild places in the United Kingdom such as Dartmoor inspired by local folklore, untamed nature and the spirits of place.
A plant growing in a crack of the pavement in the city, a wild swim in the river Dart, the power of a hailstorm fills her with absolute joy and gratefulness of being alive and humble.
Currently she brings forth a body of work on the elements (air, fire, water, earth and aether) depicting mythical beings as well images received in visionary states through trance. It is instinctive. It is expressive. It serves both as fine art as well as a visual portal. To strengthen this power and in admiration for the earth more and more organic materials are integrated. Pigments are made from different places practicing reciprocal foraging.
Her work are in collections in Germany and UK.
She holds a degree in visual communication. Perception and cognition are still fascinating to her though her interest also includes older sciences such as alchemy and intuition takes up a significant part in her practice.
Statement
I paint to connect with other realms—the worlds that lie beyond the conditioned human eye.
Spirit speaks; the soul listens. I see myself as an empty vessel to be filled, finding this state in solitude and stillness, when the mind and ego surrender and the senses become receptive. It is the magical space between each breath, the void from which something new emerges.
My practice is rooted in animism, myth, folklore and witchcraft. I paint in trance, often with my eyes closed, paying attention to the feel of the brush on the canvas. Every stroke gives birth to the next; I scry the shapes as they emerge. I sleep in wild places to contact the powers of old. My dreams have a different quality there and guide me towards the next creation.
The land, forest, elements and fae speak through myth and folklore. When we become still, open ourselves and listen, we may encounter these voices and develop our own myths through personal experience. The paintings become portals to these pathways.
I work with natural materials such as earth, charcoal and handmade inks. A handful of soil holds a story—the traces of the land and perhaps those who walked it before us. Working with these materials deepens my relationship with the land.
The creative process is an offering, a contemplation, a ritual honouring the divinity in all that is.
